Laurel Black Design offers expertise in communications and marketing, graphic design, creative services, and the technical skills required for successful project completion. We have extensive experience in content development, logo development, collateral creation, marketing design and project management. Our projects have won national recognition.
Since 1980, we’ve provided comprehensive graphic design and communication services to meet the marketing and communications needs of a broad range of clients. Located on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State, we have a long history of serving non-profits, small businesses, professional services and public agencies.
Our work has received national recognition since 1992, from entities including the American Graphic Design Awards and the American Corporate Identity Awards. In 2012, one logo was chosen to be included in the 2012 Logo Lounge Book of Logos. In 2013, two logos by LBD received awards from the American Graphic Design and Advertising competition. In 2014, two logos were chosen by Graphic Design:usa as award winners in their annual competition.
We have also been recognized by the US Trademark Office as an expert witness on marketing in the field of corporate identity, brand building, communications and business collateral. In 2014 we provided a client with an analysis of the purpose of their wordmark, which enabled them to prevail against an infringement.
After completing a Bachelor of Arts degree at California State University at Long Beach, Laurel Black came to the Northwest to pursue graduate studies at the University of Oregon at Eugene. After earning a Master of Fine Arts degree, she held various design positions in Eugene and Seattle. In 1980, she established her design services firm in Sequim, Washington, maintaining a studio there from 1980 to 1991. Since that time, the studio has been located in Port Angeles.
“I am lucky to work in a lovely studio tucked into the trees in the Olympic foothills, where I enjoy the best parts of technology and nature. I love my wi-fi almost as much as the deer who stroll by the windows. I also enjoy working with my far-flung team of fellow creatives, who join me on project adventures from time to time.”
Meet the Team
Ellen Emmerich, Emmerich Design
Based in New York City, Ellen creates outstanding visual concepts and marketing support for her clients in financial, publishing, legal and health-related services. Her degree from Rhode Island School of Design followed by art direction for NY ad agencies and corporations led to the founding of her own firm in 1998. Ellen specializes in strategy-driven campaigns for web media featuring search engine marketing (SEM). Ellen enjoys collaborating with other committed creatives on both coasts.
John Gussman, DoubleClick Productions
John has been a photographer and videographer all his adult life, but in the early 90s his inner geek discovered a fascination with web development. He has since become expert at building complex sites, able to look at a screenful of code and see the page in his head. His photography reflects his strong visual skills, which enhance his formidable technical side. When not at his computer, John is outdoors with his cameras and his kayak, taking full advantage of the Olympic Peninsula.
Deborah Anastasi-Black, Anastasi Public Relations
Debbie Black (unfortunately no relation to Laurel) specializes in results-driven media relations, marketing communication and project management. For the past 18 years she has successfully gained coverage in national media such as The New York Times and National Public Radio, as well as numerous regional radio and television news programs, trade publications, newspapers and magazines for clients in the leisure travel, food and wine industries. Based in the Snohomish area near Seattle, Debbie has effectively partnered with Laurel Black Design on numerous advertising, event marketing and social media campaigns.
Pam Saxon, WordPress Development, Design and Marketing
Based in the Nashville area, Pam provides WordPress web development, design and consulting to small businesses and creative professionals who want to make a difference as well as a profit. In a unique marriage of talents, she brings high levels of imagination and creative problem-solving to the technical side of web development.
Pam’s extensive background in the performing arts as a director, teacher, coach and performer underpin her years of experience in these areas. If there is one thing Pam understands, it’s how to direct and choreograph clients’ marketing efforts so the design, content and development speak and engage with the audience as a unit.
